Reduction Linocut Workshop

August 3 and 4, 10:00am - 4:00pm

Cost: $200 includes some supplies. 

During this weekend workshop, participants will create a color reduction linocut with up to three colors. All colors are printed from the same linoleum block which is carved (reduced) between colors leaving little material in the end.

We will cover:

  • Designing the image

  • Transferring the image onto the block

  • Planning each color

  • Registration

  • Carving

  • Printing

    Blocks, tools and some ink provided. Paper available for purchase

Shortly after earning her MFA from UC Berkeley, Margaret Niven moved from Oakland to Santa Cruz where she lives and works. She has been included in exhibitions at The Monterey Museum of Art; Radius Gallery, Santa Cruz; Pacific Grove Art Center; Sanchez Art Center, Pacifica; Gallery Route One, Point Reyes Station; the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts, Los Angeles and Galeri Califia, Horažd'ovice, Czech Republic. She is a member of the California Society of Printmakers, The Monterey Peninsula College Printmakers and the Printmakers At The Tannery, Santa Cruz, where she prints. Niven serves on the Santa Cruz County Arts Commission, currently as chair. She recently retired from teaching at both Monterey Peninsula College and West Valley College and has organized a lecture series at the Tannery Art Center, Santa Cruz. In 2013 she travelled to Iceland for an art teacher's exchange and in 2018 to Cuba for an immersive printmaking workshop.
